Halloween Outfits, Costumes and Fancy Dress

It used to be that Halloween meant dressing up as a witch or a wizard and putting the kids in a skeleton or devil costume. Nowadays you are more likely to see the kids dressed up as Power Rangers with their parents in a Bonnie and Clyde Costume… in fact today, anything goes.

On the theme of witches and wizards, you’ll not be surprised to learn that Harry Potter costumes come high on many kids wish list… and you can get a Hedwig to match. Why you can even buy great costumes for your dog! Although I’m not sure your pet pit will thank you for being decked out in a fairy costume.

The other great reason to get dressed up is that most costumes are now pretty cheap. You can find great sources for discount costumes that look great and cost less that making them yourself… and with a lot less stress.

If you prefer your parties a little racier you can find plenty of sexy halloween outfits that are showstoppers. You can find great ideas for adult halloween costumes to suit both men and women that will add a touch of spice to your next party.

Couples halloween costumes are really popular at the moment. Whether your taste is for Bonnie and Clyde, Sonny and Cher or even Barbie and Ken, you will find costumes for you both that will put a smile on your face and those of the other party guests.

One of my personal favorites are the kids outfits. They just look so cute with their sweet chubby little faces and innocent eyes all dressed up as a Disney cartoon character. I’m always surprised that even the very young children seem to love the attention they get when all dolled up.

Men’s Halloween costumes give the boys the chance to play out their own fantasies. Whether you fancy playing a part in Pirates of the Carribean, Michael Jackson in Thriller, or become totally anonymous with a Darth Vader outfit, you can be sure there is a costume for you.

The History of Halloween is an intriguing mixture of paganism and early Christianity. The early Druids believed that on October 31st the dividing line between the living and the dead became blurred and they celebrated the event with bonfires, drunken rampages, savage rituals and bloody sacrifice. Not much changed there then.

I have failed to find any historical reference to women’s Halloween outfits back in the bad old days. The world was a lot less PC back then and I dread to think what role (if any) they played, I just hope that the kid’s were all tucked up safely in bed.

After the area was conquered by the Romans, their own beliefs became mixed in with the Celts but a similar celebration was still enacted. Finally the Catholic Church combined the pagan festivals with it’s own All Saints’, and All Souls’ days which were known as Hallowmas, probably the origin of the Halloween we know today.

So from animal skins to our modern Halloween outfits encompasses 2,000 years of history. I wonder if our pagan ancestors had as much fun as we do? Maybe this Halloween you’ll bump into one and you can ask them.
